VIEWING AUGMENTED REALITY ART
WHAT DEVICE DO I NEED FOR USING THE ARTIVIVE APP?
HOW CAN I VIEW THE DIGITAL LAYER OF AN ARTWORK?
Open the app and point the camera to an artwork extended with Artivive. In a few moments, the video should play on the Artivive app.
WHY IS THERE NO VIDEO PLAYING IN THE ARTIVIVE APP?
Please make sure that the artwork is extended by Artivive. Also, you should view the whole image on your screen. Please keep your hand steady while viewing the digital layer of the artwork. If the surrounding light is poor, please try to switch on a light or use your phone to light it up, by clicking the lightbulb icon on the screen which will turn your phone’s flash on.
HOW DOES THE SHARING FEATURE WORK?
While viewing an artwork’s digital layer through the app, you will find a “share” button. If you click this button, it will automatically record a portion of the video. Afterward, you will have the option of downloading the recording by clicking the “download” icon or sharing it on social media or messaging apps by clicking the “share” icon. Please note that the recording will have no sound.
CAN I GET ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT AN ARTWORK?
Tap on the artwork in the Artivive App while viewing it, or tap on the “i” button and get more information about the artwork. Artists can add links to their website and social media channels. Please note, this function is only available if the artists add the information.
WHY IS THERE A LIMIT OF 8 SECONDS IN THE VIDEO RECORDING FUNCTION?
We limited the recording time to 8 seconds – so people can share something similar to a trailer of the artwork. The AR extension of artworks made with Artivive can be experienced in full by seeing the analog artwork and scanning it with the app. We built this limitation upon the request of our artists. This allows the users to share a bit of the experience with others and at the same time protect the artist’s works.

I WANT A TO CREATE ART HOW DO I REGISTER?
WHICH ACCOUNT SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Depending on what you want to use Artivive for, you can choose which of the following accounts suits you best:
Artists – personal accounts for creating artworks that are not commissioned.
Students – personal accounts for students that are created with the student email address from the school.
Museums – for museums and art institutions.
Projects – for any commissioned artworks, businesses, agencies, brands.
WHY HAVEN'T I RECEIVED AN ACTIVATION LINK AFTER REGISTRATION?
Could you kindly check your SPAM folder? Please let us know if this didn’t solve your problem.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
If you have an artist account, you get 3 initial projects which are for free forever. If you need more, you have the option of making a one-time payment or getting a monthly subscription. For example, for 5 projects, you can pay once € 149,90 and have the AR-enabled forever.
But you can also choose to buy 10 projects and pay monthly only € 9,90. If after some months you need more than these 10 projects, you can upgrade your subscription: 10 artworks 9,90€ / month. 25 artworks 19,90€ / month. 50 artworks 29,90 € / month. 75 artworks 44,90 € / month. 100 artworks 59,90 € / month. 250 artworks 139,90 € / month. UNLIMITED 189,90€ / month.
If you downgrade or cancel the subscription, your artworks will still be in your account but not active in the app, meaning they can’t be scanned. So you have full flexibility and there is no contract you’re tied to! The first three artworks will still remain active and you can change these as you want.
WHITE LABEL / I WANT MY OWN APP
We have had some requests during the last months for a white-label solution for Artivive, and we decided not to offer one. It was a hard decision for us, but please let me explain why:
- By offering only one app for iOS and Android it’s much easier to maintain and update all the OS and to test them on the different devices.
- Each month we roll out new features (we plan to have 3D animations, maps, …) and we want all artists using the Artivive infrastructure to take advantage of these features.
- It’s much faster, easier, and cheaper for our partners to use an app that is already online and working.
- You can take advantage of our fast-growing community.
- Artivive app users (about 500k worldwide) already use the app and don’t need to install a new one with the same functionality.
- The UX of our app is the result of 5 years of development and design, we think that hiding the AR feature in another app will diminish the experience of Augmented Reality Art that we have created.
ONE-TIME PAYMENT VS MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION
If you need more artworks, you have the option of making a one-time payment or getting a monthly subscription. For example, for 5 projects, you can pay once € 149,90 and have the AR-enabled forever.
You can also decide to pay monthly and pay only € 9,90 for 10 artworks. As long as you are paying monthly for a particular set of artworks, the AR will continue to be enabled for those artworks. When you cancel or downgrade, the AR for those artworks will be disabled. You can choose which ones will be disabled. So you have the full flexibility and there is no contract you’re tied to! The first three artworks will still remain active and you can change these as you want.
CREATE AUGMENTED REALITY ART
HOW DOES THIS WHOLE THING WORK?
Our platform Bridge was created especially to be used with Artivive. It analyses the image you uploaded in order to find its unique pattern – like a fingerprint. When the Artivive app recognizes the image, it starts playing the video you uploaded. At the same time, through the camera view, the recognized image is replaced in the real world by the video. The technology we are using is called augmented reality.

Bridge is our content management tool that connects an artwork to the Artivive app.

WHAT DEVICES CAN I USE TO ACCESS MY BRIDGE ACCOUNT?
You can access your Bridge account through a desktop computer, a tablet, or a smartphone. It works with both Android and Apple iOS devices.
HOW HARD IS IT TO CREATE A PROJECT?
It depends on the story you want to tell. We suggest that you make a test: upload an image and a video that you already have. You can also use your smartphone for this test: take a picture, print it, and record a short video. This won’t take more than 5 minutes and it will give you a better understanding of the whole process.
HOW DO I START CREATING MY FIRST PROJECT?
Tap the “Add Artwork” button on the home screen, or the “Add Artwork” icon in the top right-hand corner. There are two options for you: Basic and 3D/Pro. Let us start with Basic. Give the project a name. Choose the folder you will work on. Name your folder. Drag and drop, or upload a JPG or PNG image and an MP4 video to create an augmented reality artwork. By clicking the “Add” button, you will link the image and the video. Wait a few moments for the upload to be complete. Once the project is ready, it will appear in your “Artwork Collection”.
WHAT IS THE 3D/PRO OPTION?
The 3D/Pro feature includes the common X and Y axes as well as the additional Z-axis for depth. You can incorporate size and movement to give the illusion of depth. You can add up to 6 image layers and 3 video layers. Like in the basic option, you can add images and videos either by dragging and dropping the files or by uploading them.
WHY DO I HAVE TO UPLOAD AN IMAGE AND A VIDEO?
Artivive needs a photo or image of your artwork in order to recognize it and extend it with the video dimension.
I DON’T KNOW HOW TO PRODUCE A VIDEO!
Of course you do! We are convinced you have already filmed something with your smartphone. You don’t need more skills to make a video. There are also many tutorials on how to edit and process videos and these can show you how to implement your idea. Check out some tutorials here https://artivive.com/tutorials/
SHOULD MY VIDEO HAVE SOUND?
Sound extends the experience of your AR artwork. However, if you are concerned that sound might bother exhibition visitors you can set it to play only over headphones. By pressing the “headphone” button, you can activate or deactivate the option to play the sound only over headphones. If your video has sound, this will be played and can be heard, provided that the user’s smartphone is not on mute.
CAN I MAKE MY VIDEO TRANSPARENT ON BRIDGE?
Videos can be made transparent by selecting a color to be eliminated, either by using the color-picker tool or by entering the color’s value. You can also adjust the threshold to set the transparency level.
WHY IS IT NOT OPTIMAL IF THE VIDEO IS LONGER THAN 45 SECONDS?
In order to view artworks users must hold their devices upright and point the camera at the artwork. We have found that after 45 seconds, it becomes tiring and the focus shifts from viewing and enjoying the artwork to maintaining a steady hand. Therefore, we suggest making videos that have a length of under 45 seconds. If you wish you can make them longer, just keep that in mind.
WHAT DO THE STARS IN THE PROJECT INFO MEAN?
Bridge analyses the image you uploaded to find its unique pattern – like a fingerprint. The filled stars (0-5) tell you how suitable the image was for finding a unique pattern. The images you upload need to have high contrast. Images that have very little or no detail, are only one color, or are very blurry, will not be suitable for Artivive. If you experience any difficulties, please contact us so that we can assist you.
CAN I ADD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO MY ARTWORK?
Yes, you can add information about your artwork on Bridge. To do so, press the “Artwork Info” button. Input your name, artwork name, a brief description, and your social media info. This info can be seen by users when they press the “i” button on the Artivive app.
HOW WILL MY AUDIENCE KNOW THAT THEY SHOULD USE ARTIVIVE?

WHY CAN'T I SEE A 3D PRO BUTTON?
The 3D/Pro button might not be visible if the browser window is too small, if the browser version doesn’t support it or if the hardware is too old. If the browser window is too small you can trick the system by zooming out. Still not working? Let us know!
WHAT FILE TYPES DOES BRIDGE SUPPORT?
The file types that work in Bridge are .jpg and .png files for images and any video files (eg .mp4 and .gif).
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE IMAGES AND VIDEOS USED?
For images, the max file size is 12MB, and the dimension requirements are: min 320px, max 10000px. For videos, the maximum file size is 100 MB and the minimum size is 320px. We have no length requirement for the videos, but we recommend 45 seconds.
HOW TO CONVERT IMAGES AND VIDEOS INTO THE RIGHT FORMAT?
WHY DOES BRIDGE ANALYSE THE VIDEO WHEN UPLOADED?
In order to offer the best experience, Bridge analyses the content you uploaded so it can suggest optimizations, such as adapting the aspect ratio or compressing it for faster app integration.
WHY DOES THE VIDEO HAVE A DIFFERENT ASPECT RATIO?
If your video and your image have different aspect ratios, Bridge can adjust the video for you. If you choose this option after the upload is finished, Bridge will adjust the video. As this process takes some time, the final result will be updated after a few minutes.
WHAT IS AN ASPECT RATIO?
The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height – for example, 16:9 or 4:3 are examples of aspect ratios.
WHY SHOULD THE VIDEO AND THE IMAGE HAVE THE SAME ASPECT RATIO?
For the best user experience when using the Artivive app, the image should be entirely covered by the video. This way the image becomes a window to another dimension. If the image and the video have different aspect ratios (formats), this effect cannot occur.
WHY DOES IT TAKE TIME UNTIL THE PROJECT WORKS IN BRIDGE?
The image has to be processed by Bridge in order to find its unique pattern (fingerprint). Usually, it takes only up to a minute until our databases are updated.
WHY DO SOME PROJECTS TAKE LONGER TO UPLOAD THAN OTHERS?
Depending on your location, internet connection, and the size of the video, it can sometimes take longer. We are constantly working on expanding our servers and network to give you the best experience.
CAN I EDIT MY PROJECT ON BRIDGE AFTER IT HAS BEEN PROCESSED?
Yes, you can edit your project anytime.
HOW CAN I DELETE THE PROJECT THAT GOT STUCK IN PROCESSING?
Artivive uses your artwork as a key to the digital layer. The artwork you upload on Bridge will be analyzed and stored like a code. When the Artivive App recognises the artwork through the smartphone’s camera, it will display the digital extension you uploaded. This is the reason why your artwork is processed. It shouldn’t take more than 3-5 minutes. If it takes longer, it could be, because the image/artwork uploaded has no or little information in it, if the image only has one color or if the image is blurry /unsharp. You can stop it by deleting the artwork (a delete icon will appear after several minutes). And then upload a new one with more color, or information so our system will be able to easily recognise and play your artwork.
WHY IS MY ARTWORK RECOGNISED AS A DUPLICATE?
Artivive uses your artwork as a key to the digital layer. The artwork you upload to Bridge will be analysed and stored like a code. When the Artivive App recognises the artwork through the smartphone’s camera, it will display the digital extension you uploaded.
A duplicate message appears when you upload artwork, and our system finds the same or a very similar image in an artwork that is already in our database. Because there can be only ONE digital extension for each image, it was marked as a duplicate, and it has been deactivated. There are two reasons for this to happen. You will find the cause and the solution for each reason bellow.

Case 1: Another user is using the same artwork.
It seems that you’re using an artwork that is already in use by another artist.
- Are you working with somebody else on this project, has he/she already uploaded this image? If so you should get in touch with them.
- Are you using the artwork of a famous artist, if so maybe you were not the first one to upload it to Bridge? Maybe you should try using another artwork.
- Do you think somebody is using your own work and is, therefore, violating copyright laws? If so, please get in touch with us and let us know which artwork in your collection it is. We will get in touch with the other artists and solve the issue.
Case 2: Repetitive elements in two separate artworks (logos, text, image parts).
You have uploaded two or more artworks that have the same or very similar elements: logos, headline, text, image parts, etc.
If so, try to eliminate all these elements from all the artworks and leave the space white. In this case, Artivive will look only for the parts which are different in the artworks. In most cases, it’s enough if you remove the duplicate elements only in the images you upload to Bridge. Make sure you eliminate the elements from all artworks so the app will not mistake one artwork with the other. Like in this example here:

Before you finish your project produce, ship, or print it, please test the result on the final product (if possible try and use more than one device to scan your artwork) to make sure it works as you expect.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DELETE A PROJECT?
When you delete a project, the image, the video, and the connection are deleted from the server and there is no way to restore them.
WHY DOESN'T MY PROJECT WORK IN BRIDGE?
If it still doesn’t work after two minutes, please check how many stars your project has. If there are no stars, please look at the question above and contact us.
